The Procedure
While regular teeth whitening involves bleaching your teeth overnight, in-office whitening is quick, easy, and generally comfortable. You’ll be given a prophylactic cleaning beforehand to get rid of any plaque or residue that’s been sticking on or between your teeth, and we’ll examine your teeth to make sure there are no potential problems that might adversely affect the bleaching process. Then, we’ll keep your teeth exposed with a cheek retractor, while protecting your gums with a special resin. Then we apply the bleaching gel to your teeth. This will often be done once more, after removing the previous layer of gel, to make your teeth as white as possible. This procedure generally takes 20-30 minutes per application of bleach. Then, once this has been done, we’ll check your teeth to see if they need to be bleached again. Once you’re done, we’ll remove the resin and the cheek retractors and measure the change in the shade of your teeth.
What About After the Procedure?
Typically, due to some level of dehydration during the bleaching process, your teeth with actually appear a few shades brighter than their true color for a few days after the procedure. If you aren’t satisfied with the new color of your teeth, we’ll be glad to start another round of bleaching or talk to you about bleach kits you can take home.
